One-on-one professional training, or mentoring, is a
vitally important component of professional growth. At
the heart of the MTA Small Business Mentoring Program
(SBMP) Tier 1 is its mentoring component for construction
contractors. Pre-qualified candidates in SBMP will work in
focused, project-based experiences with a construction
management firm for projects up to $1 million to learn how
to handle project challenges in the office and in the field.
Cultivating leadership and decision making skills will be the
focus of the mentoring experience. Contractors accepted
into the advanced SBMP Tier 2 program or the SBFP will
have the opportunity to bid projects with a value of up to
$3 million.
TRAiNiNg
Construction requires a complex set of skills that spans
project management as well as business management
acumen. The MTA Small Business Development Program’s
Training Program is a formal instructional program,
intended to supplement field instruction, that has been
developed for pre-qualified construction contractors
to facilitate their understanding of how the MTA does
business and to effectively manage their projects and
businesses. The Training Program includes 11 full-day
intensive sessions covering a range of key topics that
support business growth. It is a mandatory, required
program for all contractors participating in the SBMP.
Training participation is encouraged for SBMP Tier 2 and
SBFP contractors as well as other interested contractors,
space permitting.
CApiTAL ACCESS
Access to capital is essential for business success. Through
the SBMP Loan Program provided by Carver Federal Savings
Bank, the MTA has launched a program that provides
support to participating construction contractors in both the
SBMP and SBFP for loans needed to complete MTA projects.
Payments are sequenced and aligned to each project’s
progress and each contractor’s successful completion of his
or her work.
The MTA Small Business Development Program (SBDP) is built on an integrated set of components
that support the growth and development of small, emerging construction contractors. Regardless
of the program in which you are pre-quali ed, the SBDP will provide you with important information,
opportunities and new relationships to explore your future in transportation, especially working at the MTA.
