“We spent over three months learning
about complex documentation
requirements. But it was time well
spent since we have integrated what we
have learned into our own company’s
systems, and it has made us a more
efficient company.”
Arch Builders & Developers, Inc., a Minority, Woman and
Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, is a Brooklyn-based general
contractor that was founded in 2005. The firm originally started
working in the private sector, completing numerous new
construction and renovation projects. Salma Rashid, Arch’s
President, originally from Bahrain, is trained in finance. Syed
Shah, Vice President of Operations, originally from Pakistan, is a
trained architect. The couple met in 1998 in Dubai, married and
then came to the United States.
Shah has over 40 years of experience in construction
management, with special expertise in airport construction.
Before coming to the US, he worked as an airport architect for
the Montreal based, United Nations International Civil Aviation
Organization. He represented the organization for nine years
serving as a project coordinator for a $500 million contract.
Arch had never worked in the public sector prior to the MTA
Project. Recently, the firm has been prequalified to work with
the New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) and
has been awarded two projects with the Authority. One of these
projects was scheduled for seven months and was completed in
two months. Arch is quickly becoming known for its fast track
project delivery.
According to Rashid, “Jobs done more efficiently are more
profitable.” Arch now uses iPads and new scanner technology to
increase its productivity and documentation accuracy.
