BUILDING SUCCESS
MTA’s New
Small Business
The MTA’s new Small Business Mentoring Program is a combination of innovation, hard work and
persistence to accomplish what most have said could not be done – create a program for small
businesses and MWDBEs that would facilitate project success and individual business growth.
The numbers speak for themselves:
Contract Award Growth
Launched in July 2010, the MTA SBMP has exceeded its original Year 1 legislative target of $10 million
by awarding $13.5 million in Year 1 and an additional $5 million by the end of January 31, 2012, for a
total of $18.5 million.
New Job Creation
By the end of 2011, a total of 389 jobs were created within the MTA’s 14 county service region.
New Prime Contracts
Since program inception through January 31, 2012, 34 contracts have been awarded to SBMP
contractors who now serve as prime contractors.
Banking and Bonding Relationships
Banking and bonding relationships have also grown. Carver Federal Savings Bank is providing small
business loans and Willis of New York continues to work with the SBMP contractors to build their
financial capacity.
Formal Training and Field Mentoring
Through a focused in-class training program complemented by hands-on field training, mentoring
provided by TDX Construction Corporation, Citnalta Construction Company, Howell Industries and
Fritch Construction, MTA SBMP contractors are building their capabilities to manage and deliver MTA
projects on time, on budget and safely. At the close of 2011, over 73 firms had completed the required
10-course training program.
Year 1 Small Contractor Performance
As 2011 closed, 10 projects were completed, all on time and on budget.
