The MTA has made a significant investment
to launch and operate the Small Business
Development Program (SBDP), which includes
the Small Business Mentoring Program and
the forthcoming Small Business Federal
Program. The program brings benefits
to the MTA as well as the small business
contractors it serves. From start to finish,
all of these programs allow contractors to
learn about MTA construction while enjoying
a new stream of revenue; reciprocally, the
MTA is able to increase its pool of qualified
contractors. So, the contractors’ success is also
the MTA’s success.
We have success stories to share here. These
stories highlight the early success of the
program on several projects. On the surface,
they tell a story of hard work, perseverance
and productive MTA and contractor
collaboration to build projects safely, on time
and on budget.
But there is more to the story — new business
opportunities for small businesses, new job
creation opportunities and, perhaps most
important, the story of small companies
growing and expanding capabilities in a
challenging economic environment in one of
the country’s most important market sectors
— the transportation industry.

The MTA’s Small Business
Development Program is a
transformative one for the MTA
and its operating agencies. It
has encouraged us to review our
processes and procedures for making
the MTA more user friendly to small
businesses.
Our focus on expanding
opportunities for small businesses is
tied to what our city and state need
most: new business opportunities
and new jobs. In each new contract
awarded to a small business
contractor, new jobs have been
created in addition to strengthening
the ability of each contractor to grow
profitably. The MTA is proud of its
work to create a new roadmap for job
creation and economic development
in New York.
