ABOUT
SCOTT ELECTRICAL SERVICE
The project was a complex one, involving many different
stakeholders which at times contributed to redirections. Scott
quickly overcame these obstacles by ensuring that he received
and followed only written directives. According to the MTA,
Scott really stepped up to the plate and made an extensive
effort to do things in accordance with Metro-North Railroad’s
policies and procedures. He arrived at meetings, prepared and
ready to respond.
Scott also learned that he needed to better control his
subcontractors. Moving forward, proof of purchase and
requisitions for long-lead items are important elements of his
project management controls.
Rodney Scott began his career in construction as an electrician
with the New York City Housing Authority. “But I was looking
for greater challenges,” says Scott. Scott formed Scott Electrical
Service in 1998 which is certified both as a Minority Business
Enterprise and a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise. Today
the firm has a staff of 11 in the office and in the field and works
in both New York and New Jersey. The firm has previously
completed work for the New York City School Construction
Authority and New York City Transit.
Scott Electrical Service is a full service electrical contractor, but
its goal was to learn more about general contracting. “I wanted
to learn more about becoming a general contractor, “says Scott.
The MTA SBMP program has given me the opportunity to gain
that experience. The best lesson I learned is ‘plan, plan and plan
some more.’”
Scott is a retired Captain in the New York Army National Guard
and has a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology from
Empire State College. His wife, Jacqueline, works with him as
the firm’s comptroller.
Over the term of the Poughkeepsie Station
project, nine jobs were created and maintained.
