BUILDING SUCCESS
The award-winning MTA Small Business Mentoring Program has led to a record
number of contracts being awarded to New York State certified minority-owned
businessess, women-owned businesses, MTA certified disadvantaged businesses
and small business enterprises. The program facilitates a transfer of knowledge
that is enabling its participants to become regular MTA contractors and larger
subcontractors. The program also includes classroom construction training, access
to working capital loans, surety bonding support and prime bidding opportunities.
Each project requires a general contractor to manage the project. This approach
allows small contractors to learn how to effectively manage an MTA project as a
prime contractor as well as successfully manage and coordinate subcontractors
and suppliers. The lessons learned advance the contractor’s basic understanding
of construction management and provide critical tools for growing new business
opportunities, both in general construction as well as specialty trade construction.
