BUILDING SUCCESS
Masterpiece Construction was recently granted the Long
Island Rail Road’s Atlantic Terminal & Valley Stream Stations
Enhancement project. “We are working hand-in-hand with
the MTA’s LIRR team as well as TDX Construction’s team to
accomplish the project’s multi-pronged objectives,” explains
Helen Liakaris. “Our greatest challenges involved both
administrative and operational issues.”
“First, obtaining DOT permits in this highly-trafficked
construction across from Barclay Center posed scheduling
issues,” says Helen. “The MTA worked with us to assist us in
getting those permits, which were on hold by the Building
Department as a result of the active construction in the area.”
With Masterpiece Construction, safety always comes first.
The coordination of safety efforts on the Atlantic Terminal
assignment provided its challenges. “Implementing the
very strict safety requirements and coordinating our team,
especially working adjacent to active tracks, was a learning
curve,” adds George Liakaris. “But now we are integrating those
procedures into our safety controls for all projects.”
The Atlantic Terminal portion of the project required working
on active passenger platforms, over train tracks and around
emergency hatches that lead to bustling street levels. The work
involved concrete demolition, waterproofing, sheet metal,
platform surface restoration, painting, ceiling and wall surface
replacement. “ We excavated the terminal’s pedestrian plaza,
installed water proofing and new concrete around emergency
exit hatches, restored the steel above the train tracks and
platform and installed a water diversion system to prevent
future damage,” says George Liakaris.
The Valley Stream portion of the work included window
replacements, hand rail extension and access panel
installations. The total value of this project was $384,300 and
the required trades were general construction, concrete,
waterproofing and plumbing.
Masterpiece Construction offers its clients a comprehensive
