Reality Construction, a Minority Business Enterprise, was
founded by husband and wife team, Dennis and Yvonne
Johnson in 1992. Jamaica, West Indies born and bred,
he explains that carpentry in Jamaica required a full
understanding of masonry and general contracting.
At the US Navy Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where
Dennis worked for seven years, he learned and excelled
in an additional trade of asphalt paving.
Yvonne Johnson, Reality’s Vice President, is responsible
for business development and project documentation
requirements. The company includes nine employees,
including daughter Sherene, 28, who plays a major role in the
administrative and contract management aspects
of the firm.
Reality has grown over the past three years, despite a
challenging economy. But the Johnsons see more profitable
opportunities in the public sector. Reality is also a New York
City School Construction Authority (SCA) contractor and has
completed library, laboratory, auditorium and gymnasium
upgrade projects in over nine schools with the SCA. The firm
is now a SCA Graduate Mentor and recently won two new
competitively bid projects.
